Johanna Carmona for Reproductive Justice

Strong women make strong communities. That’s why I am incredibly honored to receive a 100% rating from the Planned Parenthood of Greater New York Action Fund and to be endorsed by Eleanor’s Legacy, an organization supporting pro-choice Democratic women candidates in New York for over 20 years.

In times like this, we need strength. Our rights to bodily autonomy are under attack like never before. We need a representative who will do more than talk; we need a fighter who will stand up for the voiceless and shout. As an attorney, I dedicated my career to advocating for those who often go unheard—children, seniors, disabled individuals, and victims of sexual abuse and assault. In the Special Victims Bureau of the District Attorney’s office, I sought justice for women and children who were victims of sexual abuse and assault. In private practice, I helped first responders and other survivors of the 9/11 terrorist attacks access the 9/11 Victims’ Compensation Fund. I am not afraid to do the same in Albany.

The fact is that reproductive justice is not just about the right to choose but encompasses a broader framework that includes the right to have children, the right not to have children, and the right to parent children in safe and healthy environments, and the access to all the resources needed to do so. It recognizes the intersections of race, class, and gender and the impact these factors have on individuals' access to reproductive healthcare and resources.

As your Assemblymember, I will fight to protect and expand reproductive rights and ensure that all New Yorkers have access to the healthcare and resources they need to make informed decisions about their bodies and futures. This includes:

  • Enshrining LGBTQ+ Protections: Codifying comprehensive anti-discrimination laws that protect LGBTQ+ individuals in housing, employment, education, and public accommodations.

  • Defending Reproductive Autonomy: Advocating for legislation that protects and expands access to abortion and reproductive healthcare services, ensuring these decisions remain between a person and their healthcare provider.

  • Comprehensive Sex Education: Championing sex education programs that are inclusive, evidence-based, and provide young people with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their health and relationships.

  • Protecting and Expanding Access to Safe and Legal Abortion: Ensuring that clinics are safe, welcoming, and accessible to all, regardless of income or geographic location.

  • Supporting Family Planning and Contraceptive Access: Advocating for increased funding for family planning services and ensuring that contraceptives are affordable and accessible to everyone who needs them.

  • Fostering Maternal and Infant Health: Addressing New York's maternal mortality and morbidity rates, especially among women of color, by fighting for comprehensive prenatal and postnatal care, support for midwifery and doula services, and policies that promote safe and healthy pregnancies and childbirth experiences.

  • Advancing Reproductive Justice: Working to address disparities in reproductive health services and advocating for policies that support the health and autonomy of all New Yorkers.

Achieving reproductive justice requires collaboration across sectors and communities. As your representative, I pledge to work alongside healthcare providers, advocacy groups, and community leaders to implement policies that reflect our shared commitment to reproductive justice. My commitment is to listen to and uplift the voices of those most affected by reproductive health disparities, ensuring that our policies are informed by the real needs and experiences of New Yorkers.

Together, we can build a New York that leads the nation in reproductive justice, where every individual has the freedom and support to make the best decisions for their health, their bodies, and their futures.
